This is what I have so far...
Jamie is standing on the other side of the roped off section I’m in. She is playing nervously with the velvet rope, “Ashlon?” She looks up at me, her green eyes full of fear and questions.
“What is it Jamie?” I say, already knowing the answer.
Her voice is like the wind, low and whispery, “What if you get picked? What will I do when you’re gone?”
Jamie, my seven year old sister, is dependent on me. Our parents were executed for ‘poaching on the Capitol’s land’ But, the Capitol doesn’t use it, so honestly, why do they care if a few people try to get a decent dinner? “You’ll be fine. People will take care of you. But, Jamie, odds are against me being chosen anyway.”
She nods, “Yeah, I know, but I just have a bad feeling…” She stares at her shoes, “Promise me one thing? If you do go in, promise you’ll come home.”
“Of course, as long as there is you to come home to.”
She nods, “Okay.”
